Childhood obesity is a major public health issue. The prevalence of obesity increased 1.1% from 2010 to 2016 among 7-year-old children in Hungary. In contrast, proportion of obese children is stable in Norway. Childhood obesity is a particular challenge for health systems with limited resources. Approximately 7% of national health budgets are spent on diseases linked to obesity each year in the EU. In order to prevent childhood obesity, effective, comprehensive and accessible interventions are required. At the decision-making level, it is necessary to limit the nutritional risk factors that contribute to childhood overweight and obesity (e.g. support regular fruit and vegetable consumption). In order to support these interventions, their effectiveness must be evaluated from time to time. The effects of school fruit program on childhood obesity have not yet been examined in Hungary. In a current project, the Norwegian National Institute of Public Health is seeking to find out the school fruit program effect on children’s nutritional status. 
Activities planned under the bilateral contract: 4 dietitians/nutritionists make a study trip to Norway. During their visit the specialists familiarize themselves with the work of the Norwegian National Institute of Public Health and receive information on the interventions in the field of nutritional health. At an event organized by the host country the dietitians present the work of the National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition (Országos Gyógyszerészeti és Élelmezés-egészségügyi Intézet, OGYÉI) to the Norwegian partner. The Hungarian delegation receives detailed information about the methodology of “Evaluation of free school fruit on childhood growth and obesity” in order for the OGYÉI staff to learn the evaluation method for the school fruit program to prevent obesity. Members of the Hungarian delegation undertake to pass on the acquired knowledge in Norway to the other employees of OGYÉI.
